The computers may be useful (I have an old Mac) but the cult of Mac isn't at all. In fact, it's allowed Apple to release crappier and crappier products with little real criticism and pushed more affordable (and less gratuitously polluting) equivalents to ipods out of the market. Apple isn't socially conscious, it's yet another way for the socially self-conscious to feed their narcissism and live in an advertisement rather than the real world. It's amazing how it sucks in every single kind of narcissist, including people who consider themselves "radical" and "anti-capitalist" (but, hey, I've found many of these people who promote themselves this way are extremely narcissistic too...the marketing of "radical" and "anti-capitalism" has made it a hollow stance...it makes me sad that some of my friends have contributed to making "anarchy" into a branded product).

I updated my Apple TVs to the new 3.0 version and must say I'm rather disappointed. I like the new organization a bit better, but I'm unhappy with three aspects:

* The new UI requires that I see ads for movies to purchase/rent from the iTunes Store. Not only don't I want to see ads, but to add insult to injury, they often load slowly, forcing me to have to wait for them to load before being able to use the ATV. And you cannot turn those off. UGH!!!

* I store all my media on an server running iTunes. So I do all my watching via the "Shared Movies", "Shared TV Shows", and "Shared Music" sections. Previous versions allowed the loading of the Shared library once (whether it was Movies, TV Shows, or Music) and would retain the loaded library until I loaded a different shared library. Now, it must load my library every single time I navigate to the Shared section of each media type. And with my 2 TB library of media, this TAKES A LOOOOOOOOOOONG TIME. Hello? Apple? Anyone at the company actually *USE* this feature!?

* I really can't get used to the changed typeface. I wish they'd let me choose the font, rather than forcing that change on me. Obviously, that's a minor complaint, but it sure does change the experience of using the product.

Oh, and great earnings last night, so AAPL was up to $202! It's down at $198.93 right now (probably because of stupidity of Apple releasing a new computer without FireWire). ;-)

I am running Leopard and recently ran an update. Now my wifi connection is very unstable, dropping out frequently to the point I just give up using it and have to switch to ethernet.

I researched this using keywords on both Google and in mac forums and have seen some discussion on this, but so far haven't found anything that has resolved the issue for me. Basically what I've seen discussed is Airport Utility's software update 5.4.2 having issues, as well as possibly the recent firmware update as well. I've downgraded my software to 5.3.2 but seem to be unable to downgrade my firmware which is seems to only be available by holding the option key down when you select check for updates from within the Airport Utility menu. Supposedly holding the option key down is supposed to bring up a menu that allows you to select legacy firmware installs but I've unable to make this happen.

I haven't been on Tribe in a while, but I instantly thought of this tribe and some of the very knowledgeable people here. I was hoping someone had experienced this, and had a solution for my problem.

I've been using Griffin iMic for years. It's on my MacBook which runs my iTunes and connects to my stereo. It gives a much better sound quality than the standard audio out headphone jack.

Yesterday, i was having problems with my Macbook getting hung with a spinning wheel of death. This AM I went through the process of trouble shooting (after repairing permissions, checking the drive, etc)

I took off all peripherals and step by step did what I normally do on that machine, run iTunes and Transmission.

All was good. When I put the iMic back in, the spinnning wheel started. I was able to get the Force Quit window and saw that all applications and the finder were not responding. So I've removed that from the equation and all seems to be working fine. It's possible that this device is broken but I think it might be more something to do with Snow Leopard.

I guess my question is what is so different about Snow Leopard that a seemingly unobtrusive device is wrecking such havoc?

Also, are there any similar audio devices that are compatible with Snow Leopard now?

Never seen anything like this. Seemed fake to me because I kept trying to close it and it kept sending me more and more pop ups....

I use an external hard drive for backing up my iMac with Time Machine, so I thought that maybe I could copy the files from my iMac to my external hard drive, and then connect the external hard drive to the laptop and copy the files to the laptop from the hard drive, but when I connect the hard drive to the laptop with a USB 2.0 cable, although it says that the hard drive is found and ready for use, when I go to My Computer on the laptop, the external hard drive doesn't display. I'm kind of assuming this is because the drive is formatted for OS X and not for Windows. Is there a way to do this? I have Parallels installed on my iMac to run a virtual Windows XP machine... can I connect the iMac directly to the laptop with a USB cable and use Parallels to transfer the files somehow? Or is there no easy way to do this and I'm basically screwed?

It was in sleep mode. When I opened it up, the screen stayed black. I turned it off, and when I turned it on again, I got a gray screen (no icons or text on it), but it didn't boot any further. Now, it won't even give me a gray screen anymore. When I push the on button, it makes it's usual sound for that, but I don't hear any of it's other regular sounds, including those of the drive moving. There's no chime, but I could have turned off the sound the last time I used it. It won't turn off, but if I leave it on, the fan comes on really loudly even though the laptop is not warm. Then, in order to turn it off, I have to take the battery out.

A service person at the local store that sells macs told me that he suspects it's the motherboard, To check for sure costs 60 Euros (around 90 dollars). I'm wondering if any of you think it could be something else, which is reparable, such as a loose connection, or if you think it's a goner. In which case, I need that 60 Euros for a new laptop. If it's dead, I'd also like to take it apart and pull out the drive, but if there's hope for it, I don't want to go in there myself, in case I end up doing something that makes it unreparable. It's an ibook G4 running 10.4.11.

I've been saving up to get a new laptop in the spring, so if I could spend a few hundred now to give me those extra months, that would be great (also, I'm hoping that if I wait long enough, there'll be a matte screen option on the 13" macbook pro and a processor with lower power consumption).

Thank you for any input!

I was getting ready to send it in to be repaired, and I thought I'd try again before I wiped the drive and packed it up. This time, I jiggled the plug right after plugging it into the drive, and it started up. At first, I figured it was a loose connection that finally made contact. Jiggling it more didn't seem to make it lose contact again, but maybe my jiggling was only half hearted, since I didn't actually want to unmount my drive improperly. Then I remembered that I've repaired permissions on that drive since the last time I tried to get the USB working, so maybe the jiggling wasn't the cause of it mounting. Could the permissions be the reason it wasn't working and now is, or should I send it in anyway? The plug is USB mini-B, if that makes a difference. Thanks!

My upgrade was $39 from Apple. It was a very slow delivery compared to other things I've ordered from Apple. - about two weeks.
I loaded the disc.
My computer is a MacBook Pro, and I was running the previous version 10.55
A sign came up with a progress bar. 49 minutes for upgrade.
The progress bar was accurate, and it did in fact take 49 minutes.
After the upgrade, you have to restart.
I was happy to see that my old desktop choice came right up,,
you more mature users know how disconcerting it is, when you upgrade an OS, and your background pic didn't make the cut!
Then, there was a bouncing new software update notice from Apple in the doc.
So, I updated, and restarted again.
Then, I checked out some functions. The computer was noticeably quicker! Yeah!
Safari is way faster! Everything you've heard.. True. Expose very cool.. When you open icons in finder the enlargement is faster.
Our school district's tweaky Java-based grading program still functions, so Safari's Java functionality passes that extreme test.
Fetch works fine! So I can still update my website.. That's nice.
Quicken needed Rosetta, but you just load that once.
Some of my favorite functions and programs didn't make it though.
MPEG Streamclip and Handbrake had question mark icons in the doc.
My printer (Canon Pixma 620) worked, but it no longer recognized the computer when I attempted scanning. It gave a red warning that the scanner driver was not on my computer!
It would however scan to a flashdrive, then I could load the pics on my computer.
I downloaded the latest version of MPEG Streamclip, there's a new beta for SL which can download Youtube vids..
Haven't tried anything with Handbrake yet since it's not that important to me right now.
I sent an email query to Canon about SL incompatibility with their drivers. And Immediately got a response!!! Go Canon!
Just downloaded new drivers for printing and scanning.. Now they work beautifully!
Another thing I wanted to try was Silverlight and Playing Netflix movies. I had heard from a friend who worked at Apple that it wouldn't work anymore with SL.
Well, that may have been true early on in development, but when you go to a movie - I tried to resume one I had started before - Silverlight notices that you have SL and sends you to an upgrade sight. You download the latest version of Silverlight, and you're off to the races!
I did a time machine backup, and it didn't take forever like some had mentioned. It was done this morning after starting up last night..
One caveat is the old backups no longer show up.. It is not a problem for me since there is no data lost that I need to go and recover.
But, if you were doing things with let's say Mp2 files and I've heard many other "older" technologies, you may find that drivers you once had aren't in your computer! I read some things from the MPEG Streamclip site, and they speak of ways to recover your old drivers from Time Machine backups, and since your first TM backup cancels out all your previous backups, be forewarned that you shouldn't backup UNTIL you have tried all your "older" technologies and patches first! You may need to dig back in time. };-D

Overall, Good stuff, and worth the small amount of trouble with upgrading my favorite programs! IMO

It collects spam into a mailbox called Spam and when I went to look into that box to see all the imprisoned spam, I notice that the emails in this mailbox were color labled. I've been needing that feature for years and it was something that I assumed Mail didn't do as there was no Label menu item like there had been in Eudora, the previous email client I used eons ago. But here it was infront of me. I searched the menus, right-clicked but found nothing. For a giggle I tried the Show Colors from the Format menu, changed the color to red and low and behold! it changed the color of that email heading line in the mailbox!

Is it just me and have people been doing this for years and not telling me? When did this feature kick in?

I'm not sure if it is Firefox, but lately I've had this issue where I get the beachball, sporadically, for a second or two, and everything kind of stutters before resuming again. If I'm typing something, it will hang up and then 4 or 5 words just appear. One recent item I've installed is the MLB.com nextdef player, which (unfortunately) seems to be resident in memory whether I am watching a game or not. I can see in activity monitor that the CPU is pegged at 100% during these hiccups.

I've searched and can see that others are complaining about CPU usage by Firefox.
When I attempt it, it always hangs because programs are open.
Specifically, Suitcase Fusion really mucks things up
I always have to jump through hoops, force quit programs, etc to get the computer in a place where it will even consider restarting
I have repaired permissions several times in the normal process of maintaining my machine and OS, but this never seems to help.

Hi everybody,

I've jumped the gun and upgraded to OS X 10.6 and now i've run into a very small but highly irritating problem.

I like to use spotlight (command space) a lot to open various apps, saves using the mouse, going to apps folder or stack. Since the upgrade I've found that applications such as calculator, activity monitor, text editor, terminal and so on all appear in a foreign language. First of all I thought that spotlight couldn't find these apps, then I noticed the applications icons further down the list with foreign characters. In the past I have removed unwanted languages using system preferences > international.

The problem however only seems to be with my user account. My girl friends account on the same laptop is fine, no foreign characters under her spotlight searches at all. New accounts created also have no problems.

My User account is quite old, Its probably the same User directory I've had since running panther on my imac G4. I've since had an intel iMac and now running on a MacBookPro. My girl friends account is not as old and was created under tiger.

The bottom line is that my account is set up just how I want it. I don't really want to be playing around creating a new account and then setting everything up again. I have tried creating a new account and then copying my preferences folder to that accounts library and I get the same result.

I guess I'm asking does anybody know which plist in preferences do I need to get rid of so spotlight displays all its searches in english?

I've also tried removing the spotlight plist and logging back in.

Thanks for any suggestions,

Regards,

After firing up my nice new system, I go to system preferences, clicked the lock, type in my password to authenticate and it says either

"You must type an administrator's name and password to make changes to System Preferences."
or
"Sorry you entered an invalid username or password"

- whatever I try!

So I restarted off the boot CD, selected English as the language, go to the utilities menu, reset password, I choose the same password, restart off the hard drive again, go to system preferences, and.............. once again it tells me I have the wrong password.

Ok while I'm on a roll - anyone ever had problems with restoring drives from a Carbon Copy Clone? I tried to restore onto my laptop (after reformatting its internal drive using target disk mode) and when I power up, I get the grey "no entry sign" on startup.

Is it me or is it just one of those bad computer days? ;) I've been battling this sh*t since yesterday and I'm just spinning my wheels here.... got a client tomorrow.....
I was looking to integrate the new Jelly, Lathe and Stix Visualizers into my Itunes on Tiger, does anyone know if this is possible / is there a workaround? Apple's official answer is no.
I've already seen this issue addressed once here but it was alittle ambiguous as to whether folks got it working. I downloaded the .qtz files from a third party site (possibly corrupted?) and had to create a Compositions folder under System/Library as per the previous threads suggestions (should it have already been present?) Needless to say still nothing new showing up in itunes. Even tried downloading Ivisualize and putting the .qtz's in its folder but it only shows the first frame of each visualizer static (not much to look at.) Would love your feedback if you've gotten these to work on your Tiger System! My email is lunareye@gmail.com
Thanks!

My website works perfectly on Firefox, however the png background image that's utilized for my flyout menu's background doesn't look the same in IE. I don't have IE so I can only go by reports. Also I believe the rollover effect for the menu itself may not work in some versions of IE.

They say that a block appears and they can't see the text, the transparency is not there, and the shape of the box isn't the same as firefox. IE 8 may have resolved some on the png issues, but again I'm not sure since I can't see it. The Firefox version of my site is the way I want it to look.

Are there fixes for this? I'm on Godaddy. Am just learning html. But would love to resolve this issue since 50% of my hits are IE.

After going through these motions three days in a row, I opted to erase & re-install - which wasn't a difficult decision, being that I was *sure* that Time Machine had a full back up of everything.

Now I'm not so sure that TM had everything, as the note section (as well as enumerable emails) is gone. Well, to be specific, the note section is there - it's the notes that I had entered prior to re-installing that are missing.

I've gone through the Apple forums & have searched this forum with no success on a way to relocate and recover this data.

Are my notes gone forever? Is there a specific cache somewhere in the library that these are stored?

Any assistance is greatly appreciated...

Have a fantastic day...

I posted a thread in the Mac Tech Support tribe about my *hideous* iMac speed, and someone replied, "my PPC slowed way down after I used Time Machine." So supposing the problem *is* Time Machine... I don't even have the external hard drive attached to the iMac at the moment. Is there any way to disable whatever processing Time Machine is doing in the background when I'm not actually trying to use it? I may only want/need to hook up the hard drive and do a backup a couple of times a month. I don't want Time Machine doing all its overhead crap in the meantime.

Here's the original post. Any ideas, anyone?

I have a 24" iMac. I bought it maybe a year and a half ago. When I bought it, the first thing I did was install the maximum amount of RAM it would take (at least that's my understanding). But Jesus Christ this thing is slow!! If I click on the menu bar for Finder or whatever program I'm running, it can take a good five seconds before the drop-down menu will pop up. Then I can slide over maybe five or six menu items that pop up instantly, then when I hover over the next one, it will take another five seconds before the drop-down menu will display. When I'm scrolling through something, I can get through several lines or maybe a screen, and then it will freeze for maybe five seconds before it resumes scrolling. The same thing when I'm just typing text into a window (like this one). A couple/few times a minute, the typing will just freeze for a few seconds, then a bunch of letters will appear all at once. And God help me if I'm actually trying to click on web links. Of course, nearly every time any of these things happen, I get the rotating rainbow circle telling me that it's *trying* to do something. It just can't do it fast enough. It's WAY slower than any of my crappy old Windows laptops. It feels like it's always grinding along, never able to keep up with even the simplest tasks. Is there anything I can do about this? Do I need to defrag my hard drive or something? What the hell is going on???

Here's my hardware info:

Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac7,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 800 MHz
Boot ROM Version: IM71.007A.B03
SMC Version: 1.21f4

Any thoughts, anyone?

Anyone having any additional problems with the latest flash version? They just released 10.0.32.18 for Mac. If you have a later version than that we'd also like to know...it's so easy to figure out...

I haven't installed it yet on my main system but I guess I should so I can see how badly it fails since I don't use my secondary systems for much these days...and they're on Leopard already anyways...
You can download the installer from here if you're really, really keen on participating in..."The Experiment".
(NOTE: There is a parallel update to Adobe Acrobat that stops a similar exploit that came out today--I've upgraded to 9.1.3 myself and am testing that out right now.
