If you use handbrake to rip DVDs for your own fair use backups, then you might have noticed that occasionally handbrake fails on one disk or another. Handbrake works for most (e.g. 95+%) but for the others, what do you do? You might have luck using "Mac the Ripper" to make a copy of the dvd on your hard drive and then you can use handbrake on that copy. But, that doesn't always work either.
Another approach is to use the Handbrake CLI (command line interface). I've found it can rip dvds that the graphical version of Handbrake cannot.
I've written a page about using the Handbrake CLI via a perl script (source is provided) to make it easier to use the command line interface. You have to do this from the Terminal app, but it really isn't difficult.

Re: Handbrake CLI
Fri, November 14, 2008 - 10:53 AMA couple of tangentially related tips:
MTR 3.14 will rip a lot movies in Movie-Only mode that fail in full disk mode. In fact, I have yet to find a disc that fails movie-only mode.
FairMount is a little app that claims to be able to decode and mount virtually any DVD disk onto the desktop. You should be able to drag & drop off it from there. I have it installed, but don't use it much since the previous hint works.

Re: Handbrake CLI
Fri, November 14, 2008 - 12:58 PMI am liking handbrake quite a bit. does this script work to extract multiple TV episodes from a single DVD? I have to use the queue function on the GUI to do that.
It is weird that disks fail on the GUI but work on the CLI.

Re: Handbrake CLI
Fri, November 14, 2008 - 1:57 PMI use a combination of MTR and Handbrake. I rip everything using MTR and then queue them up in HB so I can set it to go for a day at a time. 24 movies == 24 hours on my screamin' Mac Pro! -

Re: Handbrake CLI
Mon, November 17, 2008 - 7:51 AMThe CLI tool itself only rips one track at a time. But, the ripper script I provided will rip any number of track from the same DVD. So, yes, it could rip multiple episodes from the same DVD -- that is how I use it.
It is weird that the CLI works where the GUI doesn't. I can't explain it. But, the GUI simply crashes sometimes and for those disks, I use the CLI. Simpsons volume 11, disks 2 and 4 don't work with the Handbrake GUI, but they do work with the CLI.
