I recently switched to ATT Uverse (not by choice, they made me), and now I can't get steam working with the modem/router that they provide. anyone know of a good tutorial?

Re: All STEAMed up.
Fri, February 3, 2012 - 2:31 PMYou mean the gaming software, right? Why would a different modem or router cause a problem with that? I think there must be something about it that I don't quite understand. -

Re: All STEAMed up.
Fri, February 3, 2012 - 3:20 PMWell, the point is the router. In order to have multiple devices running off the same internet address, the modem has a router built in that provides "NAT" services. One one side of the router is a single point connection to the internet, on the other is a LAN with up to 254 devices on it, served by several ethernet ports and a wifi antenna. In addition to this, the router has a firewall and several other functions to protect devices on the LAN. This firewall may be the problem with the connection with STEAM, on the other hand, port forwarding through the NAT might be the culprit. *sigh* -

Re: All STEAMed up.
Fri, February 3, 2012 - 8:02 PMa router is a router and you should be able to log into it via a web browser.
they usually make the admin password be the default. i've Googled that information for a FIOS router before. -

Re: All STEAMed up.
Fri, February 3, 2012 - 10:46 PMOh, I can get in, I've plugged in the ports in the NAT server that need to be passed through, I've opened the firewall, I've done everything but shut down all peripherals and make it a bridge. -

Re: All STEAMed up.
Sat, February 4, 2012 - 5:13 PMIt's certainly possible you won't get it working due to router specific issues. You might check this website for a guide:
portforward.com
And if you can't find one for your particular router, you can try using another router's guide as a guide and see if you can succeed. Try this one, if your router isn't present or doesn't have a guide for Steam:
portforward.com/english/ro..._Client.htm -

Re: All STEAMed up.
Tue, February 7, 2012 - 12:24 PMWhat router is it that you have? Can't you just set portforwarding to temporarily set the computer you wish to use as the default interface for the router's incoming packets from the Internet? If this isn't the problem, then try turning off the firewall software on the computer you're trying to connect to see if that helps things. -

Tue, February 7, 2012 - 2:51 PM1 I don't thing the firewall CAN be turned off in snow leopard.
2) Motorola NVG510
Yes, there is a separate portforwarding feature but it doesn't allow ranges, so each port would have to be plugged in manually, that's about 100 ports. -

Re: All STEAMed up.
Thu, February 9, 2012 - 11:24 PMYep, just follow the Stoshman's instructions there and it should turn it off on the Mac itself. I've noticed that this works for doing sharing sometimes…not sure why the Firewall blocks things like Printersharing, etc when it does…but it does; thar be bugs.

Re: All STEAMed up.
Fri, February 10, 2012 - 12:16 AMturns out, STEAM produced an update that works much faster. And something like after a while they cut support to the old one. No auto-uploads to the new version.
anyway, not sure of the details, but a manual re-download of the software did the trick.
