I see a variety of "cooling lap desks" on the market. I'm wondering if any of y'all could make recommendations on which ones work well for you. There is a wide variety of feedback available on a wide variety of cooling products. I just want to get the heat off my lap. And if the thing also gets the heat away from the laptop, even better.
I drive a MBPro, if that makes any difference.

Thu, July 2, 2009 - 2:37 PMThat raindesign piece has caught my eye. But the powered-fan thing in other options is somehow appealing, too.

Re: Laptop Cooling...
Thu, July 2, 2009 - 10:01 AMYes, they work really well. My Dell laptop runs really hot, and the fan is constantly running at full speed.
I bought one of these: www.amazon.com/gp/product..._oh_product
And now the fan doesn't run at all, and the underside of the laptop is cool to the touch. It's whisper quiet too. -

Re: Laptop Cooling...
Thu, July 2, 2009 - 2:36 PMWell, the Dell puts out heat in a different way from a MBPro. Right? Would this thing also pull heat from a MBPro, which has no venting on the underside? -

Re: Laptop Cooling...
Thu, July 2, 2009 - 6:56 PMThe whole thing is designed as a heat sink, with dual fans. All laptops get hot on the underside, where the CPU is located. So that's where the heat will be removed. The Dell's fan exhausts from the side, not underneath. You definitely want a pad with fans for the ultimate in cooling ability. -

Re: Laptop Cooling...
Tue, July 21, 2009 - 8:53 PMSo I did a little "experiment" and tried different cooling methods (checking temps on my machine using iStat Pro).
It's a MacBook pro. All these temps are recorded while the machine has been plugged in for a while, during what I call my "normal everyday" use. Four "settings":
1) Normal - machine is plugged in and sitting on a wooden surface.
2) Antec Pad - Machine is plugged in and sitting on top of Antec Pad on "low" setting
3) Thermaltake Fan - Machine is plugged in, sitting on wooden surface, with cooling fan set at 50% and pointed at keyboard.
4) Desk fan - machine sits on a piece of inverted wire shelving with an oscillating fan pointed at it, pushing air on its lowest setting.

Re: Laptop Cooling...
Wed, July 22, 2009 - 9:05 AMHow long did you let the laptop sit on each setting before you took the readings? Did you go directly from #2 to #3, to #4? Or did you let the laptop heat back up to #1 levels, and then try #3 and #4? -
-
Re: Laptop Cooling...
Wed, July 22, 2009 - 11:06 AMApproximately an hour each time before taking a reading. Each instance was done on a different day. I put the laptop down and said, "Sit Ubu, sit." -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Laptop Cooling...
Wed, July 22, 2009 - 12:12 PMDid you every do a test to see how the machine fares on its own, but with you controlling the speed of the internal fans? For example, you can crank the fans, using smcFanControl, to 6k rpm and the machine will cool pretty radically. I'd be interested in that test versus the others.
Additionally, I'd suggest adding one more piece of data to your test: ambient noise level. Some solutions are noisier than others. I'd be interested in knowing if the internal fans are more effective and quieter than the other solutions (or less effective and noisier, for that matter). -
