Where's my music?

OK, the last 3 days have been an electronic nightmare. The short story is that the HD on my main mac got f'ed up and wouldn't boot, and today Disk Warrior fixed it - pretty quickly too.

Now I'm making sure I have multiple backups and I'm running into a mystery with my iTunes music. All my songs, book, pcasts, movies show up and play in iTunes, but I can't find the actual .mp3 or .m4a files in the finder!

I get: Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Artist/Album/_MSL.DB but no song files! Where did they go? This must be a iTunes 7.6.2 thing...

not sure what "_MSL.DB" is, but you files *should" be in that folder.

have you looked in terminal? if the .DS_Store file was corrupted, the files may be there but not displaying.

Yeah, they used to be. That's the mystery.

I'm not terminal literate, though I am aware of ls, cd, man, and rm. Maybe I need Tinkertool or Cocktail or some such to "Show Invisibles" ? How would I rebuild .DS_Store?

        open terminal
        cd Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Artist/Album/
        ls -al

(-al is show all as a list)

What's up here? iTunes music is listed, but then it's not there...?

    Open iTunes prefs>Advanced>General

That should show you your iTunes music folder location

That is true for many people. However, you do/did have the option, when running iTunes for the very first time (not sure about 7.6 though) of searching your entire computer and NOT placing found MP3s in the default music folder when they are "imported" from these other locations on the drive. This leaves their locations in the database but not in the default folder...I guess. If you have the disk space, it is always wise to import all found MP3s to the default folder when you first launch a new version, un-license accepted, version of iTunes...of course, that may mean that your default itunes music folder is full of music from games, etc...which is why folks often would choose NOT to import any found MP3s into their default music folder.

I know where it is. It's in the default location. Preferences confirms that. The Artist and Album folders are there. The songs even play. I just can't find the individual song files.

Well I still don't know where the song files went, but I got 'em back.
I did a "Consolidate Library". It must have run for 3-4 hours, but at 195 gb that's to be expected...
