Easy to install a new hard drive in a Macbook Pro?

topic posted Mon, September 24, 2007 - 6:07 PM by  timonkey
I am about to purchase a new Macbook Pro 2.2 Ghz, but want to upgrade the internal drive to a 7200 rpm drive. I have tracked down some good deals on both the computer and new drive, and plan on doing the install myself.

I have installed RAM, Airport cards, and internal hard drives on a variety of older machines (PB G4, PMac G4 and G5). Does anyone have experience with the new Macbook Pros that I should know about? Does doing it yourself void the warranty? Any advice would be appreciated.

I just replaced the internal drive in my MBP 17" rev 1 a few days ago. Using the Service Source manual, it was easy. But I would warn against putting a 7200 rpm drive inside a MBP, as the things cook already. Adding a 7200 rpm drive is likely to cause your machine to get even hotter.

      hmmmm....

I will primarily be using the laptop for running Ableton Live in a performance setting. On my aging Powerbook G4, I have noticed a dramatic difference in performance when I run my sound files from an external OWC 7200 rpm drive versus the internal 5400 rpm drive (so dramatic that the internal drive is basically unusable for this purpose). I don't want to have to bring an external drive to my gigs anymore (the extra cords and power supply make a laptop far less ergonomic to set up, especially in an already crowded dj booth designed for vinyl turntables!)

In your opinion, will the default drive be good enough to rock??? I guess I can always try it out, and upgrade if I really need to. Would the extra heat be enough to damage the other components, or just singe the hair off my legs?

You'll want to take the external drive anyway. From recommendations from touring musician friends, you want two external hard drives for the road that have the same files backed up as a just in case.

Your system will always run smoother if you are sourcing the audio files that you are playing from a hard drive other than the boot drive that the applications are sitting on. It's just the way to do it. I suggest velcro pads that you can slap things up on walls or onto other gear with. Stick with the external drive though. The chances of audio failure in play back is far decreased if you do.

It is absolutely a BAD idea to do audio or video off your boot drive. So you're going to want to have an external drive, which can certainly be a 7200 rpm drive. Absolutely you will see a performance difference between 7200 and 5400 rpm in many uses. And an external drive doesn't mean having to carry a lot of cables; use a 2.5" FireWire drive and it can power off the computer just fine. I do this all the time.

As for the extra heat, it is likely that the computer will shut itself off before any real damage occurs, but bear in mind that heat is one of the most prominent sources of electronics failures. Exposure to heat doesn't always result in immediate danger, but can certainly lead to a considerably shorter life-span for any piece of electronics.

Get a 2.5" 7200rpm FireWire drive and you won't be disappointed.

Thanks for the advice. I guess a bus-powered 7200 rpm firewire drive is the solution I'm looking for. Until the day when we can have multiple hard drives inside a single laptop!

I know OWC makes an "On-the-Go" drive that fits those specs. Any other hard drive manufacturers out there you all would reccomend over OWC?

I picked up a rockstor 7200rpm, 500 GB the other week and it's been a fine addition to my desk top set up. I decided to get an external instead of internal hard drive added in preparation for the laptop days that will soon be coming for me. Works flawlessly so far and was about $400.
    • Well, I think it is a matter of degrees... (hahaha)

But, seriously, I've been watching movies on my new MBP all morning, which has a 7200rpm drive in it, and the SMART info says the drive is running at 89.6 degrees F. That is noticeably cooler than skin temperature. Yes, no doubt that a 5400rpm drive might run a few degrees cooler, but I hardly think it matters much. The fans are barely running... The hottest component is the graphics processor diode at 140 degrees F. The ambient air temperature is 91.4 and my room temperature is 70 degrees.

So, I hardly think my mac is cooking with a 7200rpm drive. But, it runs really, really fast with 4GB memory, the 7200rpm drive and its 2.5Ghz core duo processor...
      • i wouldn't expect the 7200 to be significantly hotter, tho it does consume a significant amount more power...
        • Hmmm... I'm not sure I agree:

          eshop.macsales.com/item/Hitachi/0A50940/

This seems to say that the Hitachi 7200 200GB drive uses about the same power and has the same heat emissions as its 5400 rpm counterparts...

This is the drive in my MBP (I checked in the System Profiler).

You guys were scaring me... overheating, consuming too much power. I'm certain these things used to be true, but for the very latest models, they don't seem to be. At least, if one is willing to believe the info put out there by the manufacturer. But, if my own experience with running the MBP all day watching movies is any form of proof, then I am satisfied. It ran cool enough all day.
