I updated my Apple TVs to the new 3.0 version and must say I'm rather disappointed. I like the new organization a bit better, but I'm unhappy with three aspects:
* The new UI requires that I see ads for movies to purchase/rent from the iTunes Store. Not only don't I want to see ads, but to add insult to injury, they often load slowly, forcing me to have to wait for them to load before being able to use the ATV. And you cannot turn those off. UGH!!!
* I store all my media on an server running iTunes. So I do all my watching via the "Shared Movies", "Shared TV Shows", and "Shared Music" sections. Previous versions allowed the loading of the Shared library once (whether it was Movies, TV Shows, or Music) and would retain the loaded library until I loaded a different shared library. Now, it must load my library every single time I navigate to the Shared section of each media type. And with my 2 TB library of media, this TAKES A LOOOOOOOOOOONG TIME. Hello? Apple? Anyone at the company actually *USE* this feature!?
* I really can't get used to the changed typeface. I wish they'd let me choose the font, rather than forcing that change on me. Obviously, that's a minor complaint, but it sure does change the experience of using the product.

Re: Apple TV v3.0 OS
Mon, November 2, 2009 - 10:34 AMThat sucks! A buddy of mine has one, and I like it. I'll let him know to skip 3.0.
He also has a Vudu, which is a very similar little movie/TV-show rental box, but also comes with "Vudu Labs" which has YouTube, Flickr, Pandora, and a few other internet media-related sites. Interfaces only, no web browsing. I would think with competition out there and on their heels, they wouldn't be making the experience more difficult/annoying.

Mon, November 2, 2009 - 4:57 PMI don't think they're intentionally making it more annoying, but I'm unhappy with the changes. I'm not surprised that each revision pushes more towards purchases/rentals on the iTunes Store, but I should be able to turn that off, since I don't use those features and don't want the advertising. -
