Tiger to Leopard with Super Duper

I've got two systems that need to be updated to Leopard (one is a G5 Quad PPC and the other an Intel iMac, if it matters).

My plan is to:

1) Backup with Super Duper, so I have a clone of each main hard drive.

2) Wipe each partition clean

3) Clean install of Leopard

4) Copy data from Mail and iPhoto, plus documents to new Leopard install

Are there any flaws with this plan? My only hesitation might be the moving of the Mail boxes, especially as one has a lot of imported boxes into it and I'm still trrying to figure out of 10.4 and 10.5 use trhe same structure.

Any thoughts or opinions are really appreciated. This is my first Mac OS move.

Thanks,
Olivia

I would most definitely start with burning you Mail
and photos to some removable media.

Dont be studpid - you need to do this for at least your eMail....

And then remember - you need to do the installs separate....

as you got one G5 and one intel install -

you CANNOT use a clone of one for the other.

But then again - we all knew this already...

Actually, this is incorrect. Leopard is Universal. It will boot both architectures. You CAN (and I do) use a single image for both.

Yes, this should work. It is in essence what I did, except that I bought a new computer, which is equivalent to wiping your computer's hard drive because it started out with a fresh install of leopard. I didn't use the migration assistant. I copied my files across.

I think migration assistant will be an easier route unless you are highly familiar with where OS X stores various kinds of files. My mailboxes transferred just fine. If the new Mail.app wants to import them it will do so, otherwise it will just use them.

Copying the mail to a removable disk (e.g. a DVD) might seem like overkill, but I had two hard drive copies of my previous system -- one I made with CCC and the other in my previous computer itself. Two copies is not too much to ask for critical, irreplaceable data.

I forgot about the Migration Assistant, and will read up on it. Initially the suggestion of using it with the Super Duper backup seems the way to go.

      I'm confused by this:

"My mailboxes transferred just fine. If the new Mail.app wants to import them it will do so, otherwise it will just use them."

What do you mean by "it will just use them"? Not import them but each time seek out the mailbox files from the backup? That won't be acceptable.

i just upgraded tiger to leopard and found it worked seemlessly. i had saved the total users file to an external hd.
and yet tiger respected everything on my hard drive better than i could have imagined.

and then i saw this leopard tour video again where they talk about installing the os and how it is made to install with out affecting any other files. i thought you may want to watch it as i found it very reassuring. (it's toward the end of the video)

btw, i don't believe the guy in the video works at an apple store... :)

The mailbox structure is the same in 10.4 + 10.5

You can just move the Mail + Mail Downloads folders from the Library folders in each of your home folders, but the Migration Assistant works quite well, and is easier to use.

Just to verify, the backup that Super Duper creates, if saved to another HD, can be used with the Migration Assistant?

Yes, as long as it's bootable.

Migration assistant looks for volumes with a valid Mac OS X operating system on it, then will offer you the options to move any or all of:
        - Applications
        - Users
        - (Non system) Files from root of the drive
        - Network & Other settings
        - even other volumes

I usually do only the users & network settings (never underestimate the value of keeping the list of wifi networks, you've joined). I avoid doing applications unless the installers or serials have been lost. It's just cleaner to go with that fresh slate.

BTW: Apple's Pro Apps (Final Cut, Aperture, etc) don't migrate. Most everything else does in my experience. YMMV
