My mail works fine except when my girlfriend sends me email (save the jokes for later)
She gets a mail delivery error

We live together, and are on the same network/outgoing smtp (if that matters)

I am not sure where to even begin to locate the cause and solution to this issue

any help getting started is appreciated

thanks in advance

    Jakester ,
. .No teliing - w h a t - went wrong . Some of us do not even use Outlook Distress® or Apple ® Mail and let our I S P 's screen all the junk , spam , sniffers , and crawlers out for us . It's an option . They do a pretty good job , the I S P 's . There's always sneaker net or you could just have her desktop show up on your's or verse vica
    Just a thought , h t h :)

What's the error say? What software are each of you using? The SMTP configuration is exactly the same? She can send others email?

    hi
yes, we are on Earthlink (for outgoing SMTP)
we use Apple mail, and the outgoing settings are the same

and...as I went to reproduce the issue that was happening for a solid week, everything worked fine
was there some kind of issue with Earthlink that you were aware of.

And stosher...seriously?...is your advice to use sneaker net? why bother responding at all?

Yes, there was. A client of mine had the exact same problem last week, he could email anyone BUT his wife from Apple Mail, and she could mail anyone. If he mailed from earthlink's webmail it went through fine, just through Apple Mail.

Earthlink support was amazingly unhelpful, at one point blaming he vacation notifier. I narrowed it down to a fuckup at the Earthlink SMTP server, but since their support was so inept, I'm sure it never got reported.

In the end, I converted him and his wife to Gmail, set gmail to check their earthlink accounts and all is good (faster and more stable and free -- save for my time).

Agreed. Bail on Earthlink as soon as you can, move to Gmail.

          thanks.

sometimes computer issues are so obscure its enough to drive a person nuts.

I'd love to dump Earthlink, but the girl has a lot of accounts tied up to it.
We are in the process of untangling her from Earthlink.

Can we use Gmail just as our outgoing SMTP?

will that work with all the iphone settings, etc?

IF you have a Gmail account that is checking an earthlink account it will send mail through Gmail's SMTP servers "half-heartedly" as coming from that earthlink address.

I say half-heartedly because it clearly lists in the long headers that it was sent as address@earthlink.net by address@gmail.com. 90% of the people on the interwebs don't look at the long headers, but some email clients (I'm looking at you outlook!) display these lines by default.

If the girl has a domain whose email is hosted by earthlink, take a good look at google apps. i have my personal domain hosted by them, and as long as you're under 50 email addresses and 7GB of storage PER account is enough then the Standard Google Apps service is free.

              there are no domain issues.

Back in the day, she set up an earthlink email account, and tied every subscription, and web service to that earthlink account. That is what I mean by untangling her. Essentially going into all of the profiles she has around the interwebs and changing her email address.

I will look into google apps and gmail, and see if it makes sense for us to switch.

The other issue, is that we travel a lot, and want to be able to send mail from wherever we are.
              Earthlink allowed that

I suspect that google smtp will as well

google isn't going to care where you are sending from, of course. but the network you are on might. for instance, in iceland i couldn't send mail with Mail.app for any of the 10 outgoing mail servers i had access to.... they funnel all smtp traffic to their outgoing mail server and if you don't have an account there, well tuff doodoo.

gmail can be configured to check an earthlink account -- which would bring all the subscriptions with you -- and can even be configured to send mail AS the old address (like i said above, with limited success -- it works for automatic services, but it's designed to not be very stealthy about it).
