DVD Player Won't Read SOME Burned CDs/DVDs

I'm running 10.4.11 on a G5 Desktop and the DVD player won't read some non-replicated CDs/DVDs. It will read some but not all. I AM able to read these CD/DVDs on another Mac and on PCs.

Any ideas?

The drive is dying. Happens all the time. Mine on my laptop is dying right now, too, for the 3rd time.

A G5's drive is very easy to replace, though. You can order this replacement mechanism:

    computers.pricegrabber.com/dvd-...4294/

And instructions on how to replace the drive are here:

    manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/...DIY.pdf

    It's VERY easy and inexpensive.

So, I buy the Pioneer DVR-115 and install it. I even updated the firmware to 1.18. It won't work on my G5. I called Pioneer customer support and --as expected--they claim it won't work on a Mac though they've "heard" some people have modified them to work.

Did I get the wrong drive or is there a driver that I need to load?

      Thanks

Weird. I've not heard anything about them not working on the Mac. What version of the OS are you running? A little research has indicated it may not be properly supported prior to 10.4.3.

By "doesn't work", what do you mean? What have you tried? Are you trying only iLife apps or have you tried apps such as Toast 9?

            I'm running 10.4.11 - Maybe it's time to upgrade.

Doesn't work = I can't load any CDs or DVDs. My old Sony will at least sometimes load those if I eject and reload 4-5 times (I'm assuming, as you suggested, that the drive is going bad).

When I burned CD/DVDs I was using Toast 5.2.3. Old, I know, but seemed to do the trick.

Very very very old. Is the drive acknowledged by the System Profiler?

It's the latest update without upgrading to Leopard. It does acknowledge the drive. Shows that I upgraded the firmware. Do you think that upgrading to Leopard will do the trick?

I had a user who was having problems with her DVD drive come in last week. Our solution was to blow any cruft out of the drive with compressed air, and then insert a blank CD that had been wiped with a little rubbing alcohol. It seemed to have cleaned up whatever was blocking the laser, or whatever. This was on a G4 iBook with a slot loading drive, running 10.4.11

Oh, you meant that the Toast is older than the hills. Yeah, kind of embarrassing really. When the dog still hunts...

Yeah, well, that dog is so old it still has OS 9 fleas. You need to upgrade to software that is more modern, meaning Toast 7, 8, or 9, and Toast will likely recognize the burner right away.

Another question is what version of iTunes are you running? Does it recognize the drive? How about Disk Utility?

So, System Profiler recognizes the DVD-RW and knows everything about it. But when you put a known-good disc into the drive, it fails to show up on the Desktop?

BTW, if the drive continues to go unrecognized, one solution may be to run Patchburn:

                    www.patchburn.de/

But I'd ensure that the drive is truly not being recognized, first.

Disk Utility does not recognize the DVD drive, though I didn't know that it would recognize anything but a hard drive anyway. ITunes is 7.7 and it does not recognize music CDs, but when I try to burn a disc from iTunes it gives me the following popup. "Could not find your preferred disc burner. OK to use PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-115D (ATA) instead?" The system recognizes and knows that the drive is there. The "preferred disc burner" part was interesting.

I click OK and pop put in a blank DVD. I hear it spinning up and down for a minute or two and then it just spits out the DVD, sucks it back in and spins and makes a sound like it's trying to read the disc, then spits it out again.

Already tried the Patchburn to no avail.

                        Very weird.

Well, I apologize straight out for steering you wrong. I had no idea the DVR-115 made for a change from previous revs, where only speed increases were provided.

I know for a fact that the DVR-112 and DVR-111 work great in all Macs. So perhaps you can return the 115 and get a 112?

From CD DVD Supplies web site:
                          www.cd-dvd-supplies.com/cgi-bi...rt2.cgi

Recommended for Windows PCs only -- Not recommended for use with Macintosh computers at this time. The newest Mac OS version 10.3.5 and earlier versions do NOT yet feature full native support for this advanced drive. See a discussion of this situation in the Mac drive support forum at www.accelerateyourmac.com/. Various Mac applications, such as the very latest version of Toast 6.0.7 from Roxio, are beginning to support the drive, with more support every week. Since Apple has supported every Pioneer DVD Writer over the years soon after each new drive model began shipping, we expect full native Mac OS support soon.

I went to accelerateyourmac.com and searched for DVR-115 and found that there is a flash memory update that may help.

                          dvrflash.rpc1.org/

                          Best of luck.

Flashed the firmware to 1.18 to no avail. I'm going to try upgrading to leopard. I'm sure that the drive will be supported at some point. Maybe Leopard will do the trick.

Jory, not to worry. It was only a $29 investment and I'm sure that I can swap it for a 112. Thanks for the help.

I'm going to throw my hat in here too. My PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-109 is capable of burning DVDs and verifying them. But when asked to mount the DVD, nothing (Toast 8). When I eject and re-insert, I get the "Disk Unreadable" alert. I'm honestly not sure I've ever put a DVD in the drive to play it since I got the thing. Reads and writes CDs flawlessly.

                              Details:
-G-5 Tower, Last version of Tiger, Toast 8.
-Toast 8 sees any DVD I put in there, including one I got from Layers Magazine, even shows the title.
-Disk Utility: When trying to verify the disk mentioned above, I get:

                              Verifying volume “disk5s1”
                              ** /dev/disk5s1
Invalid BS_jmpBoot in boot block: 66671c
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
                              1 non HFS volume checked
                              Volume needs repair

Before I switch to Leopard, which is still in the box out of pure fear of installation, I'd like to know that this was working as it should be.

                              Thanks.
