CD burner issues..?

Hello folks.
I am wondering if any of you all recognize this problem.
Lately some CDs are not burning properly and I think its a hardware issue.
Using both Toast and i-tunes, the discs say they burn successfully on my macbook pro, but the latter half of the CD gets distorted on playback.

Any ideas?

It could also be your media. The super-cheap no-name discs are usually about 10% crap. But I'd keep my money on the drive... :) Been through 3 myself.

Great thanks. I am still under apple care, so apple should fix this for me.

I called apple this afternoon and they basically just led me through a couple of reset procedures.
They waited while I burned a new CD and it worked fine. That doesn't necessarily mean that it's fixed, but it seems to be at the moment.
They said sometimes the system doesn't allocate enough resources to the optical drive, and the reset gets things balanced again.
        FYI.

Can I ask what they had you do? Mine isn't burning or recognizing CD's or DVD's now either, and I'm outside my warranty.

Yeah, if you would be so kind? I would love to burn a few DVDs but it fails.
Can't even remember the error it's been so long since I attempted to burn one.

Ah. The DVD part of this captures my interest because mine fails to recognize any DVD, even ones I've created that DO work on my TV's DVD player.

Mine plays rented DVD's just fine and reads CDs. Just goes far into the write process then epic fail when it is finishing writing the CD. All looks fine to that point. Fuckit, maybe I'll burn a coaster later just to nail the error msg and call Apple and set up an appointment. I am on a total roll art wise and goddamn it I don't want to lose my Mac for 2-5 days for something that isn't an emergency at this point!

Well, first off, my problem wasn't with the drive not reading CD's/DVD's. My problem was that it would burn CD's but the CD's would be distorted upon playback, especially at the latter half of the CD. So... drive reading problems might not benefit from the same treatment.

Anyway, the tech guy had me shut down the computer. Once shut down, remove the power cord, remove the battery, and hold down the power button for 10 seconds. (This is for a MBP).

This is the first reset. The second is a little more difficult.

Put the battery back with the power cord. Now hold Apple-Option-P-R while hitting the power on. Continue to hold the 4 buttons (not the power) until you hear the ding of the computer starting TWICE. Then power up as usual.

I was told that these resets could work for some general maintenance issues, but not to do them often. If your computer needs this done more often that every couple of months, there is a bigger problem.

                  Hope this helps.
