Yes i know this is an old topic but for years this has been the main issue with my MacBook pro and im sick of it. My mac never runs lower than 170F and tops off around 197F. The fans constantly run at full speed, 6k rpm. Not only can i never use my MacBook on my lap its also loud as hell and can never run any audio cuz the fans filter out the sound to well. I cant leave my MacBook running over night unless its in a room where no one is sleeping and on the far side of the house! I dont have apple care anymore and i dont know who to go to.
I sometimes use blue ice packs and stack them under the my MacBook :) but that only gets temp down by 3 degrees max! Anyone?

  • If your machine is running that hot, then you must have some applications using the CPU constantly. Here's what you need to do:

    * Launch Activity Monitor (found in /Applications/Utilities)

    * Go to the top of the window where it says "My Processes" and change it to "All Processes".

    * Click on the "CPU" header in the list of processes, ensuring the little gray triangle is point-side down (sorted with the most CPU-using process at the top).

    * Look at the list and see what processes are using the CPU and how much.

    * Look at the CPU Usage graph at the bottom of the window. If that window doesn't show mostly black, your CPU is being utilized a lot.

    * Look at the "% Idle" number near the CPU Usage graph. It should be low, when your computer is not busy. (Mine is currently hovering between 82-85%.)

There are two extremely likely hidden things using up your CPU: Flash content on web pages & Dashboard widgets. If you see that Safari (or Firefox or another browser) is using 85% of your CPU, it's likely that you have some Flash content displaying. Close the browser and see if the usage decreases considerably. And be sure not to leave running any Dashboard widgets you don't really need, as they take up CPU at all times, whether you see them or not.

Well, I'm assuming that you bought and early model Intel Macbook Pro since you refer to this as "an old topic for years" (even though I can't recall seeing this particular problem in this tribe for a couple of years now) and since your Apple Care has run out. So you bought this in 2005/2006?

A quick search on google for "macbook pro runs hot" yielded this from '06:
    forum.onmac.net/showthread.php
    And this more recently:
    askville.amazon.com/Macbook-...Viewer.do

So maybe take it to an Apple Store and have them redo the thermal paste on the chip(s) or do it yourself. I'm assuming since you did Q&R at Intel, you don't mind getting your hands dirty.
