So I did some searching and found it may be due to the recent 2.1 DVD update or something, so I used a utility to flash it back (actually I used the RPC software and tried both the RPC and 'original' versions), but no change. It seems to play most DVD's fine, just won't burn.
I'm wondering if any of these DVD cleaning gadgets are worth a go or if I should prepare for a couple weeks of downtime and take it in for service (it's within it's 1 year warranty).
Or - any other possible solutions? This is a MBP 2.2ghz with a Matshita UJ-857E drive.

Re: MBP suddently won't burn DVD's or CD's.
Fri, August 8, 2008 - 9:28 AMIt's very simple. Matshita makes crap quality drives nowadays. Mine has died THREE TIMES in this MacBook Pro. It's died so many times that I actually have to ship my laptop in for service this time, as the local repair shop is prohibited by Apple from fixing any problem more than twice.
This is a known recurring issue. Hell, my local repair guy told me that I'd have to ship in the computer back when he replaced the drive for the SECOND time. -

How long did it take to get yours serviced locally? Where did you take it? -

Re: MBP suddently won't burn DVD's or CD's.
Fri, August 8, 2008 - 10:45 AMI take mine to the Marin Mac Store. They'll usually help me out and turn it around in a few hours. Of course, that means I bring it in the first time for them to verify the issue, they order the part, and then I bring it back the minute they call to say the part has arrived.
