  Run Disk Utility permission repairs. Try downloading the 3.5.4 full installer and see if a full app replacement works. Clear the cache files from your ~/Library/ folder for Firefox. Those are the first three things that come to mind...past that you may be getting into more difficult territory if you're trying to save your Firefox profile settings...

    I'd already tried disk utilities from the start up disk - I did it again from the HD after reading your post - neither worked - so I took your advice and downloaded the full application via safari - that worked! Thanks :)

      I've been using it for a few hours and I think it may be buggy. Certainly having problems updating plugins. Not a good sign...

            I cleared the Firefox caches and then restarted the computer and that seemed to help.
