I just acquired a Linksys WRT54G-TM, and I haven't been able to figure out what to do to set it up. The disk that came with it is only good for Microshit Windoz.

I know somebody must have one, and can tell me what I need to do.

Reset it and use an ethernet connection and a web browser to program it.

    Instructions:

So far, I have only been able to hold the reset button for 30 seconds. I actually held it longer for good measure. I couldn't open it with the IP address via browser. This was a problem that I had before. One other thing, was that I did plug the eithernet cable form the mac to port of the router that says Internet.

You should use one of the LAN ports instead of the Internet port, since the router probably won't allow you to use the web interface over the Internet port for security reasons. Also, I've had problems with Safari with other Linksys boxes, so I'd suggest trying Firefox or some other browser instead.

        HTH - Good luck!

If you're plugged into the LAN ports, and your airport is off, your Network Preferences should show you the IP and router address assigned to your Ethernet connection.

Plug that router address into the web browser. Account / Password will likely be one of the following

          blank (empty) / admin
          admin / admin
          admin / password

other than that, reset and try again.

thanx all. Now I am trying to remember what and if I need to fill the slot that says Domain Name. I can't remember what I did in Airport.

I use ATT DSL for those that have inquiring minds.

      Hmm,
Dana's the smartest guy in here . i concur with his Firefox® suggestion
lLast time i used Linksys® it was a simple 802.11 g pcmcia card in my old 15 " TiPowerbook slot . You want it ? i do not use it anymore :)
A T & T - D S L huh ? That's not much good either. They have no Mac experts on their staff any more . They fired them . Serious .. A T & T is an all Microsloth® shop at this time - iPhone® and iTouch® not withstanding . They only sell them . They do not support us
      Well , here is an A T & T router i p gateway addy you can try
      216.77.188.41
      NetRange: 216.76.0.0 - 216.79.255.255
      CIDR: 216.76.0.0/14
      NetName: BELLSNET-BLK5
      Whois has started ...
      OrgName: BellSouth.net Inc.
      OrgID: BELL
      Address: 575 Morosgo Drive
      City: Atlanta
      StateProv: GA
      PostalCode: 30324
      Country: US

Bell South handles A T & T email service . they put out an annoucement two weeks ago that things were going to be screwed up today , and users would need to sign back in to their email and hit the ' remember me ' button again
You could just try using dial up and get ip domain numbers close to your area using ' Network Utility ' and ' Netstat '
Try to get in that way and then switch over somehow ? You might glean some infromation from this page maybe

      dslhelp.att.net/iw/dsl/homePage.jsp

. .if you click the person's face on that page it sends you to an official A T & T chat line , i think

      best of luck •

You probably don't need to configure a Domain Name in your router. In fact, if you manage to successfully reset the router to its factory default settings it'll probably work reasonably well without you having to configure anything, since it should get an IP address dynamically from your ATT DSL modem or their server(s), and it should probably also hand out IP addresses to your local computer(s) via DHCP on whatever the default network is that it uses (probably 192.168.0.x or 192.168.1.x, but it could be something else, too). So, once again I'm assuming that you are able to reset the router, you should make sure your Mac is set to get an address via DHCP and is plugged into one of the LAN ports. If you then start the "Network Utility" application which is in the "Utilities" folder in your "Applications" folder you can see what your Mac's IP address is - your router will almost certainly use the same IP address as your Mac except the last number in the address will be "1" instead of whatever your Mac is (which will probably be something like "100" or "101" - it'll be something between 1 and 254). You should then be able to use that IP address in your browser to access the web interface of the router and tidy up the config, such as configuring a better password, setting better wireless security, etc.

      Good luck!

P.S. Stosher is being gracious in his description of me - there are a lot of smart people who hang out here and I'm not likely to be the smartest among them.

I never liked Linksys products, however I found that the WRT54GL is the one exception, since I can replace their crappy firmware with the open source dd-wrt and run the machine intelligently for what *I* need.

Otherwise, I agree that their stuff pretty much sucks.
