I have been a supporter of Epson for a long time. I have told people (whether readers here agree or not) that if you want a laser printer go with HP and if you want an ink jet go with Epson.
That all changed last night.
For personal use I have an Epson Stylus C62. I have used it for several years. If you don't use it for awhile the nozzles clog, but Epson included some software, the Epson Printer Utility, for doing such things as running a head cleaning, checking ink remaining, etc.
Somehow, I managed to lose this application. I don't know when I deleted it. Okay, I was stupid. I admit it. But it was done. I needed it last night and it was nowhere to be found. My bad.
So I went to Epson's website and spent over an hour trying to find it. All I could find were the drivers which I didn't need as they are built into OS 10.5.x.
So this morning I called customer support. What a fiasco. "I just need to get a copy of this application," I said.
"Oh, are you looking for the driver?"
"No, I need the Epson Printer Utility."
"I can tell you how to tell how much ink you have left."
"I don't need that, I need the Printer Utility so I can clean the heads."
"Are you on the website now? I can tell you where you can download the driver."
"I don't need the driver! I just want the Printer Utility."
"Are you using OS X 4 or 5?
"5"
"Well, the driver for the C62 is built into it"
"I DON'T NEED THE DRIVER! Look, I realize you're probably in India. Is there anyone who speaks English as a first language and can understand me?"
"Actually, I'm in the Philippines. What do you need?"
"I just need the Epson Printer Utility."
"Well, if you download the driver, it will install the driver and the printer utility."
"But I don't need the driver, and the driver on the website says it's for Mac OS X 4.x, not 5."
"Well, that's what you'd need to do."
"Why would I install an older driver?"
"That wouldn't be a good idea, would it?"
"Forget it. I'll just go out and buy a Canon or a Kodak printer. Say goodbye to your ink sales. Have a nice day."
So I hung up and, in a pissy mood, I went to their website and sent in a complaint to their service department. In a few minutes I received a response that my email had been received and I'd get an answer soon. About 45 minutes later I received a boilerplate email about how to choose a freakin' driver.
Fellow printer users, whether or not you like or I like the Epson hardware and software is not my point here. If you think you might ever need customer support STAY AWAY FROM EPSON.
Excuse me, I'll be leaving soon to get a new printer that won't be from Epson.
Grrrrrr.

Re: Epson Sucks
Thu, March 27, 2008 - 10:09 AMFirst, can you tell me if you see a 'C62Series.plugin' located at MacHD>Library>Printers>EPSON>InkjetPrinter?
From what I can see, the installer from the Epson site installs the same version as installed by default with the OS.
Next, here's a link to the printer utility:
www.groknessmonster.com/epson.zip
It's default install location is at:
MacHD>Library>Printers>EPSON>InkjetPrinter>Utilities
An alias is created upon install and placed in the Applications folder.

Re: Epson Sucks
Thu, March 27, 2008 - 10:48 AMHi, KC.
Thanks for the info.
Here's even some more info.
1) Epson has written to me saying, "if your using leopard as your os unfortunately we no longer have a driver available.
using leopard native drive will not provide the ink levels and other print options for your printer."
Apparently, they not only don't support Leopard with a driver, but they also don't support English. All of the bad grammar is directly from them.
2) In the past, all one had to do was open the Epson Printer Utility to check ink levels, clean the heads, etc. Now, including the fact that you can't check ink levels, to access the cleaning functions, checking nozzles, etc., you have to do this:
"kindly go to the apple icon and proceed to system preferences.
double click on print and fax icon
highlight your printer and click on print queue button
a window will appear giving you the utility option"
Good bye Epson! -

Re: Epson Sucks
Thu, March 27, 2008 - 11:19 AMwhat you have to do under 10.5 to get at the Epson Print Utility:
System Preferences>Print & Fax>Open Printer Que
THEN go to the menu bar, which should read Epson <Model Whatever>, and select Printer>Printer Utility
There it is, just like the previous versions... what a pain.

Thu, March 27, 2008 - 11:22 AMoops, you just said that.
Sounds like an Applescript or Automator Action is called for here. I'm no good at either of those...

Re: Epson Sucks
Sat, March 29, 2008 - 2:21 AMI love my Kodak all in one. Nice price plus consumables are half the price of epson or canon. the prints are lovely as well. my color photos come out pretty okay even on regular paper!!
for text i am still using my old bro 1440, built like a tank and cheap cost for consumables.
but really, check out the kodak all in ones. you will be a believer!

Re: Epson Sucks
Thu, June 5, 2008 - 7:43 AMI just figured out a trick for easy access to the Printer Utility:
Once you get it open, there will be a PU icon in the dock. Right click it and select "Keep in Dock".

Thu, March 27, 2008 - 11:21 AMFor completely different reasons, I threw out my Epson (in favor of a Brother) a looong time ago. -

Re: Epson Sucks
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 11:07 AMI work tech support for a remote access sofware that offers remote printing. Epson and HP are at the tob of our troublesome list. Brother is at the bottom. If this speaks to the usability in general (which I feel it does) I would opt for a Brother printer any day.

Re: Epson Sucks
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 7:38 PMThat was probably 1 of the only bits of helpful advice I may have had for you!
For me, the customer service was just plain rude, and in the end, after much time..., no help at all.
Life has been much easier since I bought a Canon.

Poor experience
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 3:45 PMThat's a sucky experience for sure. I've had my issues with finding Epson's software and drivers but I'm on the third Epson printer (1270, RX320, and R2400) and I loved each one.
I hope things are sorted out in short order. -

Re: Poor experience
Thu, June 5, 2008 - 11:38 AMThe drivers for the R260 have printer utility 3 which works fine under leopard. The only problem is that two of my comps use Tiger and the print settings default to draft quality-light brown type. (every time)
