Re: Apple TV now shipping!
Wed, March 21, 2007 - 12:33 PMI'll get one when it can wifi to tv what's spinning on my PB's DVD.
And then I'll get a tv too. -
-
Re: Apple TV now shipping!
Wed, March 21, 2007 - 1:21 PMI'll get one sooner than that. I've already begun converting all my DVDs to H.264. That's an ENORMOUS task, though. Gotta buy a new Mac mini and put it in the closet. -
-
Re: Apple TV now shipping!
Wed, March 21, 2007 - 2:18 PMok so heres a question. can you just get a mini and stream video to it? say from another mac. i would rather spend double and have internet and the ability to just burn my dvds to it hard drive directly. -
-
Re: Apple TV now shipping!
Wed, March 21, 2007 - 2:45 PMsort of.
you can add your movies to the host machine's itunes and then share that library. connect to the shared library on the mini (the client in this case) and viola!
of course if you're attempting to do this over 802.11g, you may experience some lag. ethernet would be better.
-
Re: Apple TV now shipping!
Wed, March 21, 2007 - 4:46 PMThe problem is that the video outputs of the Mini basically suck, especially compared to the AppleTV. -
-
Re: Apple TV now shipping!
Wed, March 21, 2007 - 5:38 PMnot really.
mac mini has a DVI out, and a DVI > HDMI cable runs you about $50 (about the same as an HDMI > HDMI cable). AFAIK the only real difference between DVI & HDMI is that HDMI has audio included.
component is analog, which is going to give you crap picture. -
-
Re: Apple TV now shipping!
Wed, March 21, 2007 - 6:25 PMIt may be analog, but it's what my TV takes for input. I don't have any HDMI-capable displays, other than computer displays. And that ain't gonna change anytime soon.
-
Re: Apple TV now shipping!
Wed, March 21, 2007 - 7:31 PM"component is analog, which is going to give you crap picture."
Oh, I definitely wouldnt say its crap. Sometimes, component looks better than DVI/HDMI. All depends on the source & the display.
Besides, component is capable of 1080p just fine. My LCD TV has both, but if my Wii wasnt already using my component inputs, I wouldnt have a problem using them for AppleTV at all.
And I too thought of doing the Mac mini thing hooked directly up to my LCD TV. I was gonna use the mini as a slave & control it via Apple Remote Desktop through my MacBook, have the mini's iPhoto & iTunes content (and every other video with different codecs) living on a massive external hard drive thats hooked into my Airport Extreme's usb slot & just control it that way.
I still might, but speed concerns me, especially since my 802.11n network will be brought down speed wise because the mini will be thrown into the mix. Plus, Remote Desktop will take some speed away from the network too im sure. -

doesnt apple tv stream? so wouldnt that slow down the internet too -

Re: Apple TV now shipping!
Thu, March 22, 2007 - 10:41 PMYou can either stream to the AppleTV or you can load things onto it's internal storage. -

Re: Apple TV now shipping!
Thu, March 22, 2007 - 5:49 PMthe problem with analog isn't necessarily in the video / raster imaging, because the video usually smooths out, but using a non-digital/hd display for the actual computer use isn't pretty at all. The text is damned near unreadable. -

Re: Apple TV now shipping!
Fri, March 23, 2007 - 3:23 PMI have a question -- maybe someone can answer it. I don't have a widescreen TV. In fact, I don't have a TV. I have a projector, and it seems to be a standard aspect ratio, like a VGA screen. I often hook it up to my computer using a VGA cable to watch movies.
If I understand the Apple TV specs, I can't use it. My projector is a "Widescreen" model. But, what would happen if I connected it? The projector has component video inputs, so the plugs are compatible. What will happen? Will it work?
Alternatively, does the mac mini have any way to get a VGA signal out of it? Or component video? If Apple TV won't work for me, I might just buy a mini and use that instead. My movies are already in mp4 format and they already play on my mac. So, mirroring them on a mac mini would be no problem for me.
Thoughts anyone? Thanks for your input. -
-
Re: Apple TV now shipping!
Fri, March 23, 2007 - 2:47 PMThe AppleTV will probably work with your projector's component connection, but the picture might be squished. Depends on what video settings are available on your projector.
Yes, Mac mini's come with a DVI to VGA adapter. Cant do DVI to Component that im aware of.
-
Re: Apple TV now shipping!
Fri, March 23, 2007 - 3:55 PMA projector is a TV, according to today's terminology.
Why do you say it's simultaneously a widescreen model and a standard aspect ratio -- that doesn't add up for me.
What model is your projector? -
-
Re: Apple TV now shipping!
Fri, March 23, 2007 - 4:44 PMOops. I meant to write that it *is not* a widescreen projector. Not that it is. My bad.
I have anEpson EMP S1
www.epson.com.au/products/.../emps1.asp
It has an 800x600 display, but it says in the specs that it can do a "resize" to 1024 x 768 -- I don't know what that means, but perhaps it means that it can accept data that large and resize it down to 800x600?
Thoughts?

Re: Apple TV now shipping!
Fri, March 23, 2007 - 4:42 PMThe answer you seek is here:
www.rogueamoeba.com/utm/post...-22-21-30
Yes, your projector should work, since it must support 480i. Every TV supports 480i, as does the AppleTV. And the AppleTV also supports higher resolutions, which your projector might, too.
Any display device with component video or HDMI will work with AppleTV. -

According to reports, not every SDTV with component works currently, but most do. -

Re: Apple TV now shipping!
Fri, March 23, 2007 - 8:57 PMHow can an SDTV that has component video inputs NOT work? 480i is available on the AppleTV and that is the definition of SDTV. What reports are you seeing? -
-
Re: Apple TV now shipping!
Sat, March 24, 2007 - 6:11 PMBecause some older 4:3 SDTVs that have component dont have the "enhanced 16:9" setting. So, since the AppleTV only outputs to 16:9, people are saying that the picture is either squished or it doesnt display at all (most work though). Some 4:3 TVs will just keep flickering, trying to compensate for the 16:9 output from the AppleTV, but they never resolve it, so it just sorta gets stuck in this confused state. At least, thats what I've been reading in forums.
So, who wants to bet that someone will hack the AppleTV to run a full version of OS X?? They already got Xvid & SSH on it, so they can load VLC player & stuff like that. Hopefully, they will make it to where you can just control it through Apple Remote Desktop, then you could play any file you want. That would be bad ass.
Seems its basically just a Mac mini without an optical drive & any working ports. I dont know about the RAM though. That may be a tuff one to get around for Tiger. Maybe it can run Jaguar?? -
-
Re: Apple TV now shipping!
Sat, March 24, 2007 - 8:43 PMHmm...I'm still not understanding why (and I actually have a clue about how video works). AFAIK, enhanced 16x9 is really just 720x480 pixels where the pixel size is rectangular, instead of square, resulting in the same size as 854x480 in square pixels.
I suppose that if the output of the AppleTV is 720x480 instead of 640x480, then that might be the problem since the overage might step on what some TVs are expecting will be the vertical interval. I guess I'll have to ask someone at Apple if that's the case. -

Re: Apple TV now shipping!
Sun, March 25, 2007 - 8:22 AMI was @ the mac store yesterday and they had apple tv set up with some 32" screen tvs and the video sucked! It was all pixelated. it was i'm sure just downloads from itunes but god it looked bad and a couple people i overheard wanted to buy it and then decided to skip it because it was crap visually. They shoulda put in a dvd drive! also the thing was so hot i could barely even pick it up. -

Re: Apple TV now shipping!
Sun, March 25, 2007 - 9:53 AMThey had an episode of south park that was not filling the screen all the way and was jacked. The movies were better but really it was not good. They should have encoded higher for sales sake. I like the idea of this and other apple products but for them to develoop it into a DVR/DVD player/ internet tv device they need to sell it and the quality of video was not there . Now if I was encoding my own movies and using it then that is a whole different thing. -
-
Re: Apple TV now shipping!
Sun, March 25, 2007 - 6:07 PMYeah, the iTunes movies/shows they got demoing on them look like garbage. But, the 720p trailers are awesome.
Apple better get a resolution upgrade on iTunes videos quick if they want this thing to fly & want the average joe to accept this. Especially for $300. Its a good idea, so I hope they dont blow it with low quality vids.
They are in a weird place right now 'cause iPods sure cant do higher than 640 x 480, but for AppleTV, that sucks.

Re: Apple TV now shipping!
Fri, March 23, 2007 - 11:43 PMGreat! I'm convinced it would work now.
But, I'm concerned that the 40GB limit will be too little, and I don't have an n network -- just g.
At this point, I'm leaning toward getting a mini and 500GB external hard drive to hold all my lesser-compressed mp4 movies and turn it into a media center. Then I can use a wireless mouse and keyboard and make the projector be the "screen" and have a whole computer. All-in-all I think it will be far more convenient than the Apple TV. Seems like craigslist has minis for about $500 and a 500GB drive in an external enclosure is about $170. Difference in cost between an apple TV and this setup is about $370. But for that extra I get a complete computer with half a terabyte of movie and music storage. I can browse the internet, play DVDs, convert them to mp4s. Anyway, that's how I'm leaning... -

Re: Apple TV now shipping!
Sat, March 24, 2007 - 8:49 AMmini for me! i would like to just put a disk in and convert all from the same place. I could then just check email lyng on the couch or surf for that matter. I think apple tv is good for someone who just buys all their movies and music from iTunes. I get all my movies from used bins. -

Re: Apple TV now shipping!
Sat, March 24, 2007 - 8:54 AMif you intend to rip movies with the mini, you want the intel variety.... which strangely are on backorder right now (update coming soon?). -
-
Re: Apple TV now shipping!
Sat, March 24, 2007 - 9:05 AMI agree on ensuring that the Mini is Intel-based. Those $500 ones are likely G4s. I'm planning on getting a Mini, too, but still plan on having an AppleTV to stream from the Mini to. And I expect to use the Mini to do my movie ripping, as well.
I think you'll find that browsing on the TV is pretty useless, actually. The resolution is terrible (640x480, ya know!) and it will be difficult to read anything. Besides, networks are upgradable to N and if you wait and see if Apple is going to update their Minis soon (which I expect they are well overdue for), they'll probably be revved to Core 2 chips AND N support. -

No warranty afterwards, but you can hack a large HD into an AppleTV. :-) -

Re: Apple TV now shipping!
Sat, March 24, 2007 - 12:35 PM40 gigs for someone that buys movies from iTunes and stores them for viewing should be ok. Tivos don't have giantic HDs come stock in them and they seem to do ok for most consumers. You need to remember that not everyone is a power abuser like many on this list. That being said, and looking at the direction that Apple is going with this Computer meets Living Room entertainment system, I would imagine you could share your gigantic collection of media on your puter and access it from the Apple TV via wireless.
But there I go imagining again....

Re: Apple TV now shipping!
Sun, March 25, 2007 - 8:22 AMMacrumors just posted a somewhat less than glowing review:
www.macrumors.com/2007/03/2...-apple-tv/
The part I found not surprising but still notable is that the AppleTV doesn't come with any cables at all. That means you're going to have to shell out $ for your HDMI cable, or component cables. Again, I don't see what the appeal is over a mac mini... but then I did spend 3 hours yesterday defining a new monitor profile to get rid of the borders on my TV's display (but damn is that picture crisp now! even at 720p.)
