multitrack audio recording on powerbook

topic posted Wed, April 30, 2008 - 5:30 PM by  hoco
I used to use light version of Cubase on my old G4 laptop for multitrack recording. But, that laptop was barely up to the task. Now I am getting a new laptop and I'll need a new solution because my version of Cubase will only install on power PCs.

Is there a free or inexpensive multitrack recording solution for intel macs?

Is cubase the best commercial multitrack recording solution for intel macs, in case I decide to buy it? What else do you use and/or like?

I have a Edirol FA101 device for capturing audio tracks over firewire. It came with a free "lite" version of cubase. I still want to use the device, but I need a multitrack recorder for it...

Thanks for any info you care to share. Perhaps this would be better posted to an audio tribe, but I like you folks a lot better. ;-)

Garage Band comes for free with your new laptop. It might do the job.
Audacity is free and could work for you.
What do you mean by "inexpensive?" For some people, under $20,000 is "inexpensive." For others, it would have to be under $20. What amount, specifically, are you willing to spend?

True. I should have been more specific. Ideally less than $100. But, if it is necessary I'd go to $200. I didn't know Audacity could do it.

My version of cubase had a realistic-looking mixer interface that made it pretty easy to understand what was going on. I could add effects like reverb and EQ each track visually. It was pretty intuitive.

I've got Audacity 1.3.3 and I don't see that kind of interface... do you know if it has one, and if so, how do I access it?

University computer stores have great deals on Apple software. For example, I got Logic Studio Pro 8 (acadeamic) for $200 and now it's $$149.

Dude, Audacity will allow you to record up to 16 channels at once. It's free.

When you're looking for free or cheap, you're technically know as a "beggar." And as the saying goes, beggars can't be choosers. If you aren't willing to adapt to what is free or really cheap, you can't be a beggar. You'll have to pay. Find a student, as the rev suggests, and get an academic deal.

My stepson is a student, so I may go that route, but the link provided in the above post led to a broken web site when I tried it yesterday. Still, I'll bet I can find a student deal somewhere.

Any comments on Cubase vs. Logic Pro? I've never used the latter but I sure have heard the name a lot. I'm willing to spend some money for a more convenient and stable recording system... is Logic my best bet for the academic price?

Logic is not logical, so keep that in mind. I hear v8 is far improved, but I've not tried it yet.

If you're willing to spend a little for ease-of-use, I'd suggest looking for a used Mbox so you can work in Pro Tools. Should be able to get one for around $150-200, depending on the model.

I would support Jory in the choice of a used Mbox. Check out eBay or your local Craig's List. The reason being that it should include a version of Pro Tools which has become the industry standard. If you end up going into any pro studio, chances are good that they'll be running Pro Tools, so if you learn that (and there are books available on it) you will feel quite at home.

All right, thanks for asking that question as I had to dig around a bit for the answer. And now I know!

I've been using Audacity for a couple years now for voice-over recording on my Powerbook. Just an Audix mic going through a Xenix 4-chan mixer into the line-in. Nice and cheap, decent enough quality for auditions.

Anyway, being a proponent of Audacity (simpler than most other stuff I've seen - thank god!) I dug around, and found UMixIt. It's a variant of Audacity (1.2.6 - latest *stable* version) written almost primarily as a software karaoke machine, but has the mixer interface you're talking about. Checkout the screenshot / download the software here:
        www.umixit.com/download.html

Still free, and the Audacity site mentions this (and other) extensions will be added later.

          You ROCK!!!

This is exactly what I was hoping to find! I think it will be just fine, but I'll have to experiment with it to make sure I know how it works and which settings I need to use for my purposes of recording demos.

I think you just saved me a $150!
