Who's using Automator

Okay, I'll admit it, I'm one of the last people to do the Tiger update. Just did it last week.

So anyway, tonight I'm playing around with Automator. I could never figure out Applescript (wish I could, but I just wasn't programmed that way.) But it looks like Automator is for geeks like me who love the drag and drop simplicity of OS X.

So I've created a really simple workflow that opens up four different AppleWorks documents. I know I could easily select all the files and open them up that way, but now that I've created an Automator application for this task, I can do it with one click.

If someone is interested, I'll explain how I did it. Otherwise, I don't want insult the intelligence of this group.

There are a couple books out about using Automator, but I just found that going to Help menu in the application, and to the Big Apple site (www.apple.com/macosx/feat...orial4.html) is enough to get started.

So anyway, I would be interested in what ideas others have come up with.

If you don't know yet, you can actually save your workflow automations as applications and send to other people. So I'd be willing to share the ones I find or develop over time.

You're not one of the last. I'm a rabid Mac power user and I'm not on Tiger yet, primarily because QuickTime 7 needs to be fixed before I'm willing to migrate.

Hmm, I didn't know QT 7 had a problem. I've used a couple of times since installing Tiger and I didn't notice anything. But let me know what I'm overlooking, Jory.

Well, not everyone is hitting the bugs in QT7, but they hit me big time. As an example, I receive my voicemail via a web browser and QT7 is extremely flakey about playing those audio files. I've found that many other sound and video files being served up on a web browser are unplayable.

For me, this is a showstopper.

Okay, I know I should take my butt to bed, but this Automator has serious potential for me. Just made another one. Not a biggy, but it's good for lazy geeks like myself.

I call it the BookTV alarm. Basically I want the BookTV website to open up on Saturday morning so I can check what authors will be on for the weekend. Now because BookTV, IMHO, has more conservative authors than liberal or progressive ones, I just don't make the effort to go the website every Sat. morning. It would only take half a second, but hey, like I said I'm not that excited about seeing Ann Coulters and her comrades on BooTV. They're just not worth the effort.

So anyway I just created an automation to open up the BookTV webage and then saved it as iCal plug-in. I then went to the date on my calendar and attached the plug-in to the alarm for Saturday. Now the sucker will open up for me to look at on Saturday morning and if Noam Chomsky or bell hooks is not scheduled to appear then I can just check my RSS feeds for the day. Simple.

Wow, I didn't realize it integrated with iCal to allow scheduled runs of stuff. That's very cool.

Yeah, it also integrates with Image Capture, Finder, Folder Actions, Print Workflow and Script Menu.

Interesting though that Apple create actions for its AppleWorks6. So does that mean it's a dead application in their view? There's actions for TextEdit but not AppleWorks.

Yes, I think Jobs himself said "Appleworks is dead" when they released iPages. Of course, iPages doesn't do 1/3 of what Appleworks does for me yet, so it seems to be a slow death.

            Umm,

I don't think Steve said that, He did say that AppleWorks predates OS X and iLife tho and that iWork is moving to replace it. Tthe program is called Pages not iPages and it's not what AppleWorks is. Apple works is many programs in one package. AppleWorks is still available for sale and still ships with all consumer Macs.

Pages rocks at what it does, Document writing and more importantly MS Publisher style publications.

But i digress... I do also use Automator. Once a day at midnite, Automator opens my Address Book, checks for anyone who's birthday is today and opens Mail, addresses and writes a basic email to them which I then edit and send. I never forget anyone's birthday anymore!

You might be correct here, Macboyx. I'm not an expert, but is it that AppleWorks is a Carbonized program and Pages is a Cocoa program. The latter in my view is smoother and more interconnected with other iLife programs. Hell, in the Carbonized AppleWorks program I don't even think you can get spell check as you type.

But yet, Pages is not AppleWorks. The latter needs to be revamped and kept simple like other iLife programs. Pages is desktop publishing. I don't have it yet, but it looks okay. I don't have Word either, though I need it, so I'm left with AppleWorks. And it does indeed need improvement.

Well, hmm! I hadn't even looked at Automator, but now that I've opened the application, I recognize it as the thing my friend was using to search newsgroups for uploaded Dr. Who episodes.

I have no firking idea how this works, but I am going to enjoy figuring it out. Thanks, Bakari!

      Thank you, Amy.

Instead of taking my butt to bed last night, I did a little more investigation about Automator and ran across David Pogue's assessment/tutorial of it:
      www.macdevcenter.com/pub/a/m...st3.html

He kinda blasts it as being too simplistic and not up to par with what AppleScripts can do. But he did say as more developers come online to create and update applications that will accept Automator actions and workflows, that eventually it will save computer users a lot of time.

I can't agree with this Mac guru enough. Ever since Jaguar and iLife updates came along, I really have spent less time doing certain tasks at my computer. And that's really the way it should be. I need get my butt outside and enjoy life more.

This is to say, i think Apple did a great thing with Automator. It's an attempt to bring computer programing to the rest of us. I would love to learn AppleScript, and perhaps if I learn the add and drop workflow of Automator, I might some day try to learn AppleScript again.
But in the meantime, it's good to have Automator to do some simple tasks that will help me get jobs done a little faster.

Okay, found another little Automator action that is useful to me and perhaps to you.

Think about the times you've taken a screen shot of something on your desktop and it creates a pdf file. But you want to change the pdf file into a jpeg file so you can post it in a Tribes album or somewhere else on the net.

Now, the only way I knew how to make this change is drag the pdf file into Photoshop or some other image conversion program in order to change to a jpeg file. Well, folks, that laborious task has kept me from doing a lot of album postings on Tribes.

Not any more. I now have a little app. that allows me to change an pdf file simply by dropping the file on top of the the app. and it does the rest for me. It even keeps a copy of the original pdf file after the change.

Now unless you already have something like this--and no doubt some of do--you can easily find it in Automator.

    Just open the Automator application.

Click on Preview in far left column under application.

Click the Action "Change Type of Images" and drag it into the big window. In the number 2 action, change "To Type" to JPEG

Now go to File--save, and it will ask you a question. Answer the way you want and give it some type of name like, "Change thingy." Now save it as an Application, which is one of the choices you have for the file format button.

You probably want to save it to your desktop so you can try it out a few times before storing it somewhere else.

Now, just test it. Take a screen shot of something (shift-control 4) and then drop the resulting pdf file on top of your little Automator conversion application and presto, bingo you got your jpeg file.

For you visual learners, I'll try to post a screen shot of what I'm talking about in the tribe album.

Note: I think you can also save this JPEG conversion action as a Plug-in which means you might be able to control lick on a file and change it that way. But it's getting too late for me to test that now.
