I signed up for a workshop either the Apple Store or CompUSA was having
on "using your Mac to set up a home security network" but wasn't able
to make the workshop. Ever since Connectix made Digital Radar, I've
wanted to set up a home security system. Unfortunately, I've nearly always lived in
neighborhoods with a fair amount of crime. Does anyone know of a Mac
developer that has made a program for OS X that does what Digital Radar
did (or better)?
Also, I can't remember the name of the company (it's not Lo-Jack) but
there's a company that made what sounds like a terrific product for
tracing stolen Macs if you have a built in iSight camera. Does anyone
remember the name of that software or company? I'm pretty sure I first learned about it through this tribe, but a search through the tribe isn't helping me.

Re: Catching thieves with OS X
Wed, January 24, 2007 - 9:51 AMHow does this work?
You report it stolen and they activate something in the software? Seems to me that all you need to do is wipe the drive. -

Re: Catching thieves with OS X
Wed, January 24, 2007 - 10:34 AMJust guessing, but
might use something like MAC addess which is unique and would not change even if you wipe the drive? Ethernet and wireless cards (airport) all have their own unique ID. Or perhaps something like that with the built in iSight? -

Re: Catching thieves with OS X
Wed, January 24, 2007 - 10:58 AMIt says you have to set an open firmware password so the thief can't remove the software.

Re: Catching thieves with OS X
Wed, January 24, 2007 - 9:40 AMIf you are looking to set up a security system, Security Spy is the way to go. I highly recommend Axis cameras as well.
There are a couple of products out there for theft recovery of a Mac. I see there was one posted. A fun little app that I life for the new MacBooks is iAlertu. It works like a car alarm. When you move or change the state of the computer, an alarm goes off. Just like a car alarm, it won't keep someone who really want your machine from taking it... but it keeps the honest people honest.
That stated, data securiy is of utmost importance. Learn how to lock down your data.

Wed, January 24, 2007 - 10:55 AMThanks, Buck and Alberto. Undercover is definitely the app I think someone posted here before. As for security systems, I'll look into what you suggested, Alberto. I'm really tired of assholes getting away with stuff. -
