Re: jailbreak for iphone 3.0 is out
Fri, June 19, 2009 - 10:51 AMPeople are STILL jailbreaking?!?
What could you possibly get out of it now that apps are out?
(other than a different cell service) -

Re: jailbreak for iphone 3.0 is out
Fri, June 19, 2009 - 11:03 AMThere's a million reasons to jailbreak. Just off the top of my head:
- 1000's of iphone themes, customized icons, etc
- additional utilities and apps not found on the app store
- SSH, using skype on 3G, lots of other very useful hacks
- running any app in the background
- being able to try any paid app for free before buying
- using an international SIM card when I travel

Re: jailbreak for iphone 3.0 is out
Fri, June 19, 2009 - 1:45 PMIf you're gonna do it, make sure you use simple mode, and if it asks if you've pwnd before, say no. Then let it take you into DFU mode. Then you'll do the restore from the custom IPSW.
The sucky thing is it wipes your iphone clean, but you can restore all of your settings from a backup. It just takes a while to put all of your music back on the phone.
Not sure if jailbroken apps I used to have still work, or any of my themes. I may have to download them again from Cydia.
** Make sure you restore with the custom IPSW generated by pwnage tool, not the standard iphone version -

Re: jailbreak for iphone 3.0 is out
Fri, June 19, 2009 - 3:19 PMand also make sure that you take anything out of the "categories" folder if you have those. otherwise you'll have a loss of space that you can't get back unless you do a fresh reinstall of the OS.
my favorite thing about jailbreaking is definitely the winterboard. having the ability to changes themes (especially the icon set) is pretty great. besides, there's no point for me to not jailbreak again since i have to unlock it for me to use the t-mobile service... -

Re: jailbreak for iphone 3.0 is out
Mon, June 22, 2009 - 12:40 PMI'm jailbreaking mine just so I can do video on my standard 3G.
That they didn't include that sucks balls. NO way I'm paying another $400 just for the privilege of having video recording. -

Re: jailbreak for iphone 3.0 is out
Mon, June 22, 2009 - 9:44 PMThe 3G doesn't do video because it's not just a software solution. The 3GS has additional video capture hardware that allows it to perform the function. It wasn't an arbitrary "fuck you". Not like the refusal to allow MMS on the original iPhone. -

Re: jailbreak for iphone 3.0 is out
Tue, June 23, 2009 - 8:34 AMCan you tether with jailbreaking?
Whats this about SSH? Is it just a standard text SSH terminal?

Re: jailbreak for iphone 3.0 is out
Tue, June 23, 2009 - 8:39 AMIt is full access to your iphone filesystem. You can use Fugu to access your iphone with nice drag and drop.
Tethering is not supported by AT&T yet, but I haven't tried it with jaibreaking yet.

Re: jailbreak for iphone 3.0 is out
Tue, June 23, 2009 - 10:28 AMyou don't have to jailbreak to tether.
Go to help.BenM.at on your iPhone 3.0 browser. Use at your own risk. Your mileage may vary. Call your mother.

Re: jailbreak for iphone 3.0 is out
Tue, June 23, 2009 - 1:13 PMYes, you can tether using an app via the jailbreak.
There's also a shell terminal, as well as an SSH server. You can do a LOT when jailbroken.

I get decent 15fps video out of my 3G with this: iphonevideorecorder.com/ -

Re: jailbreak for iphone 3.0 is out
Fri, June 26, 2009 - 4:25 PMRIght. And the 3GS does 30 fps because it has specific hardware for the purpose.
