Wed, December 12, 2007 - 9:41 AMWTF are you talking about?
G3 is an ancient Power PC chip. The iPhone uses a much smaller ARM processor.

And now it gets REALLY confusing. :-) -

Re: G3 iPhone
Wed, December 12, 2007 - 2:55 PMHeheheh
It only makes sense...
Iphone's been out just about a year, they have a 5 year exclusivity contract with ATT, which ends in about 4 years, and they'll announce the new models at the WWDC in 2010. Of course, by then, 3G tech will be quite outdated, the the new model will work on some other mode, but ... you get the idea. -

Re: G3 iPhone
Wed, December 12, 2007 - 3:51 PMactually AT&T blabbermouth -- er CEO -- already said a 3G iPhone would be out in 2008.
Not that it really matters for those of us in the US because AT&T's 3G network is so incredibly piss-poor that the average user gets better speed on EDGE (seriously, the numbers I've seen have been 80kbps over 3G on AT&T Broadband cards).
I'm sure AT&T will promise major upgrades prior to the release, but then they said that with EDGE & the first release, and their EDGE network still sucks. -
-
Re: G3 iPhone
Wed, December 12, 2007 - 4:06 PMHave you watched the spinny thing that rolls around when the phone is accessing a network? Spins fast when on wifi, but sloooooow when on EDGE. Cool graphic!

Jory, I seem to recall that you had uploaded pages to your iphone and attempted to access them locally and still had a lag. that would seem to contradict the report you sited. -

Re: G3 iPhone
Thu, December 13, 2007 - 1:35 AMMy experience was in trying to open a very large JPEG. I found that MobileSafari is the worst bottleneck on the iPhone, not EDGE. And that was later confirmed by a developer who determined that MobileSafari web applications, as Apple tried to sell developers on as an SDK, was 200 times slower than native iPhone apps. -

Re: G3 iPhone
Thu, December 13, 2007 - 5:31 PMSo What if you were to buy a unlocked iPhone from say (Europe) could you use it in the USA on any network? -
-
Re: G3 iPhone
Thu, December 13, 2007 - 6:12 PMnot quite that simple...
The current iPhone is GSM/EDGE. The only carriers with GSM service in the states are AT&T and T-Mobile. An unlocked iPhone (whether it be from Europe or from software) would still only work on those two networks.
A 3G iPhone -- tho yet to be announced, and all unreleased Apple product discussions are purely speculation -- is still likely to be AT&T only, which means GSM/3G. So again, AT&T or T-Mobile only. Additionally, while T-Mobile has plans to roll out 3G over their coverage area in 2008, at this moment they have like nada for 3G service.
So yes, you *could* get an unlocked iPhone, but it's never going to quite work on *any* network. -

I am sure a 3G iPhone would be the perfect marketing tool to allow AT+T to start reaping some profit from their 3G infrastructure investment.

Sun, April 27, 2008 - 2:27 AMSO MY BOTH OF MY PARENTS CURRENTLY WORK FOR AT&T AND HAVE BEEN TELLING ME NOT TO UPGRADE TO THE LARGER IPHONE BECAUSE A NEW VERSION (3G CAPABLE) WOULD BE RELEASED SOON. UP UNTIL THIS AFTERNOON THEY WOULD NOT TELL ME THE DATE OF THE RELEASE. WHICH IS MAY 10TH FOR ALL OF YOU OUT THERE THAT ARE WONDERING. THEY ALSO SAID THERE WOULD BE A COUPLE NEW FEATURES BUT THEY FAILED TO MENTION WHAT THEY WERE. IF I FIND OUT BEFORE THE LEAK OR THE RELEASE I WILL LET YOU GUYS KNOW. -

Re: G3 iPhone
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 3:50 AMNo friends or pictures, and SHOUTING ALL THE TIME. Not sure I see the incentive to believe a word of it. Not to mention that the SDK apps get released in June, so pretty much everything is on hold until then. But, sure, nothing like a product roll-out, in a month traditionally left alone, to billow the sales of another product a month later.

Re: G3 iPhone
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 11:59 AMnew iMacs are scheduled to roll out within the next month.
with all the rumors flying about these days, I'll be surprised if we don't have a 3G iPhone at WWDC. But, before then? And steal fire from the iPhone centric WWDC? That would be remarkably un-apple like foolish.
As far as Isiah goes, even IF I believed his claims, why would anyone at AT&T know better? I mean, really if apple was sharing the release cycles with large groups of people at AT&T (or any other company), there would be MASSIVE leaks. And at this point, all that's seems to be collaborated is which 3G chipset being used (manufacturing reports leaked that).
Remember, Apple went so far as to create false mock-ups for partners before the original release.
Oh, and those supposed 3G iPhone photos that were leaked? Turns out it's an aftermarket mod case sold in Hong Kong for the current shipping model. -

Re: G3 iPhone
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 12:46 PMHmmm, maybe I'm more out of the loop than I thought. May (and April for that matter) were always the prep months, with June being the "summer special" month, and August being the back-to-school month. I could see a may shift if high schools and colleges were generally letting out early, though. -

Re: G3 iPhone
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 4:55 PMi was ready to buy the iphone online (since none are ever at the apple store) last week....but i keep thinking i should hold out. should there be any reason to believe that the new iphone wouldn't be able to be unlocked/activated/jailbroken like the first gen? i'm not switching from t-mobile anytime soon....but i have such little patience at this point and i'm ready for a new toy already!! with just a couple of months to go, i was figuring that i could buy the phone, see how the new one works out and then sell my iphone on ebay if i really want an upgrade. i'll probably end up losing 100-200 bucks though.... -

Re: G3 iPhone
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 12:43 PMI would be willing to bet that the next-gen iPhone will be locked down even tighter from unlocking, especially as they venture into the international market.
With that said, it is unlikely international carriers will give Apple such a sweet deal like AT+T did.
-troy -
-
Re: G3 iPhone
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 1:18 PMThe current iPhone is already heavily in the international markets, and the experience is quite the opposite.... several governmental agencies mandate unlocked versions of phones be available to consumers. In France & Germany (EU) the unlocked iPhone is available for a premium cost, for example (the only thing that doesn't work is Visual Voicemail -- instead it redirects you to your voicemail voice box).
Apple is taking a lot of heat for selling locked devices. I seriously doubt this is the position they WANT to be in.... but they needed carrier support to roll it out initially. Plus, what good is selling a phone that customers don't know how to activate? Pairing with carriers allows apple to control the setup and activation processes.
But still. It's an uncomfortable place for apple to be. And we know that historically, apple doesn't stay in uncomfortable positions for long. :D -

Re: G3 iPhone
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 6:02 PMfuck it all. i woke up this morning, called the apple store as i drove to the mall and found out that they just got in some 16 gig phones. cha ching!
already unlocked and enjoying the goodness
if i really want the new phone, i'll just toss this on ebay and deal with some loss....i usually go through a phone a year though, so it may be some time before it gets to that
it's gonna take some gettin used to. i still think my crackberry did it all, but i just wanted the new big boy toy.

Re: G3 iPhone
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 10:08 PMThe prices were adjusted to be the same as when there were 8's and 4's.
It sucks to find out, of course, as we all have had those moments. But for future reference, buying new Apple toys in December is a bad idea (unless you really need something immediately), since they always announce revisions and new things at Macworld Expo in January. -

It simply costs more to support all those standards.
Different nations progress on their wireless infrastructure at different rates. These are big, expensive projects. New standards keep coming, so it is not going to change soon.
