How can I make my 3MB pix into under 2MB so I can post them on a certain website? I don't want to cut off parts of the pictures, just make them smaller files.

Re: reducing MB of pix for web posting
Wed, June 17, 2009 - 11:41 AMFor step-by-step instructions, tell us your image processing programs.
If all you're using is preview, May I suggest getting something like Graphic Converter?
www.lemkesoft.com/
You can try it for free, it has many of the non-retouching features of the larger (and more expensive) programs, it opens almost any graphics format, it saves in almost any graphics format, and it's generally awesome for someone who isn't ready to jump up to Photoshop.
If you're more advance and have graphics capability, you're looking to "scale" the photo. 3Mp is a fairly large photo that should extend well off the screen at full size. If you scale it down to screen size, it should drop below a Mb quickly. This also depends on your compression method and image type.

Re: reducing MB of pix for web posting
Wed, June 17, 2009 - 12:50 PMIf you want a quick and easy way, you can just use iPhoto.
Select said photo in iPhoto, then go to file and click on export.
that will open a dialog box
Choose the kind of pix format that you want (jpeg, png, etc.)
Then pick quality. Lowest(smallest size) all the way to maximum
Next pick size. Choose custom
You can put in the dimensions that the site requires
Finally export to desktop or file folder.
Hope that helps
That's the down and dirty way.
For more advanced features there are a world of programs. Check out the Gimp. (it's open source, and free)

Re: reducing MB of pix for web posting
Wed, June 17, 2009 - 3:29 PMthanks to both of you. but i'm trying to use iphoto...
Keith, i was trying the export way, but it's not working. i open export, the dialog box opens, i click jpg, then there are no options for quality or custom.
under the format are 2 boxes:
1)size. i can only choose betw "full-size images" or "scale images no larger than (width x height), which i believe will cut off parts of the pictures.
2)name. options for Use Filename, Use Title, or Use Album Name.
I also have a box to checkmark whether i want to Use Extension.
That's it. It still isn't asking me what size MB I want these pix at. -

Wed, June 17, 2009 - 5:40 PM""scale images no larger than (width x height), which i believe will cut off parts of the pictures. "
does not crop (cut off) parts of the pictures, it just shrinks them down (proportionately) to that size.
you may need to play around with this to find a pixel size that fits within your desired MB.
Does Photoshop Elements have a "Save for web" option under File? That would probably give you a real-time estimate of file sizes.

Re: reducing MB of pix for web posting
Wed, June 17, 2009 - 5:44 PMOkay, sounds like iPhoto6.
"1)size. i can only choose betw "full-size images" or "scale images no larger than (width x height), which i believe will cut off parts of the pictures. "
Nope, that's the "Scale" function. To trim off the edges, you need to use the "crop" feature in the photo editor.
BUT. if you have Elements, you should have a much better way to more exactly scale your images.
Keep in mind that as long as you don't allow something to overwrite a file, playing around with export functions is a 'no foul' way to try new features. and the system won't let you overwrite a file without asking.
As for asking you how big you want your file, you WILL have to jump up to Graphic Convertoer or Photoshop for that (maybe elements, I've never played with it). And again, you don't need to pay for GC to try it out.

Re: reducing MB of pix for web posting
Thu, June 18, 2009 - 9:00 AMThe easiest way is to use screen capture if the size of the image is smaller than the screen size. You Apple-shift-F4 select the image then save as a .png or .jpg. -

Re: reducing MB of pix for web posting
Thu, June 18, 2009 - 11:05 PMthanks everyone.
I ended up doing it by the File-->Export way. After playing with the settings, I got it to give me options as to where it was sending the pix. It originally only offered Desktop and Applications, etc, but I got them to go to the correct folder all at once.
